Systemic Discrimination in Small Business: Detecting and Addressing Unconscious Bias

In our quest to create successful businesses, it’s crucial to address an issue that often goes unnoticed: systemic discrimination. While we may have good intentions, unconscious biases can inadvertently seep into our client interactions, perpetuating inequalities. In this blog, we will explore how to detect systemic discrimination, understand its implications, and work towards creating an inclusive and equitable business environment.

While exploring this topic please consider each section and how it applies to you as a business owner as well as all the clients within your niche. Remember, businesses are here to solve particular problems, or fulfill the specific wants or desires of clients. Inclusion in business is not about including all the people on Earth but rather including ALL the people within your niche.

Okay, now that’s covered, let’s get into it!

Detecting Discrimination in a Small Business

Discrimination can take various forms, often manifesting as biases or assumptions that hinder the inclusive environment you aim to create. To detect discrimination, it’s crucial to be vigilant and observant of certain signs. Here are some examples of discrimination that can occur in a small business:

  • Unequal treatment: Treating clients differently based on their race, gender, or other characteristic or identity.
  • Limited accessibility: Failing to provide equal access to your services for individuals with disabilities, diverse backgrounds, or neurodivergences.
  • Exclusionary practices: Neglecting to include diverse perspectives in decision-making processes or collaborations.
  • Microaggressions: Unintentional, subtle behaviors or comments that marginalise or offend certain individuals and communities

Unconscious Bias and Systemic Discrimination

Systemic discrimination often stems from unconscious bias, which refers to the automatic associations and stereotypes formed in our minds without conscious awareness. As a small business owner, you may unknowingly participate in systemic discrimination through your unconscious biases. It’s essential to work on identifying and addressing these biases to prevent unintentional harm to marginalised communities.
