If you’re a values-led business owner, you’ve probably felt it:
That knot in your stomach when you go to share a new offer or sell a spot in your program, right after seeing news of injustice, tragedy, or global harm.
Maybe it’s Gaza. Maybe it’s climate disasters. Maybe it’s local injustice on your doorstep.
You care deeply about the world and the people in it…that’s who you are!
So when it’s time to “promote yourself”, it can feel wrong.
Disconnected. Out of touch. Even a bit inauthentic.
You’re not alone. So many conscious coaches, healers, creatives, educators, and space-holders feel this. It’s a deep cognitive dissonance:
How can I care about justice and also sell?
But here’s the thing: What if you’re not meant to separate the two at all?
What if your business already is part of the bigger picture?
Why It Feels So Hard
Most of us were taught that business is “neutral”.
That it shouldn’t be talking about social injustice. That we should stay in our lane.
Meanwhile, we’re told that activism or allyship happens outside business. In our free time, on our personal pages, in protests, petitions, or donations.
So when you feel the weight of the world and the need to pay your bills, it’s no wonder you feel torn in half.
But the truth is, business is never neutral.
Every business (big or small) either upholds harmful systems or helps to dismantle them.
Your pricing, policies, voice, audience, who you pay, who you serve, the stories you tell, the platforms you use… All of it makes ripples.
It already has an impact, whether you see it or not.
Business Is a Tool for Positive Social Change
You don’t need a degree in politics to speak up.
You don’t need to be a “perfect activist”.
And you definitely don’t have to stop selling what you do.
You do need to understand how your work fits into the web of change.
When you see that your business is part of the solution, not separate from it, the tension softens.
Selling stops feeling shallow.
It becomes resourcing.
It funds your life, your community, and your ability to keep showing up for what matters most.
There Are Layers of Allyship
Being an ally or activist isn’t one single identity you wear; it lives in layers:
- In your personal life: how you speak up at the dinner table, raise kids, challenge biases, and set boundaries with loved ones.
- In your business: who you serve, how you market, who you hire, how you centre inclusion and accessibility, how you redistribute money and power.
- In your community & public life: what you support, how you vote, where you donate, the conversations you have, the movements you stand with.
Trying to “do it all” at once is a fast track to burnout.
That’s why I help values-led business owners start with the business layer.
Your work is already a vehicle for change. The key is making sure it aligns with your values, so you never feel split between “doing the right thing” and “making a living”.
And as your confidence and capacity grow, you can expand that impact into the other layers too… In a way that feels sustainable and true to you.
Practical Ways to Care and Sell
It’s one thing to understand your business is part of social change, but what does that actually look like in practice? Here are some grounded ways to weave your values into how you sell, so you don’t feel like you’re choosing between caring and making a living.
Integrate, don’t switch:
Instead of swinging between “activist mode” and “sales mode”, weave your values into how you show up all the time. When your values consistently show up in everything you do in business, it makes sense for you to talk about injustices that go against those values.
Speak to your people:
Your clients feel this too. Let them know what you stand for. When your audience trusts that your work is part of your values, selling feels more human and real — not performative. Chances are, you’ve got an audience that aligns with your values and will feel less alone themselves if you say something.
Resource yourself to keep going:
You can’t pour from an empty cup. Your business funds your capacity to show up for your family, community, and causes that matter. Something you may never have considered is how your business directly impacts social justice movements. The people you help heal, earn more, or build thriving businesses are the same people who need their cups filled so they can stay active in their activism too. Selling isn’t selling out… it’s making sure you and other allies are here for the long game.
Act within your lane:
Not everyone’s activism or allyship looks the same. Maybe you’re not at rallies, maybe you’re educating, healing, building safe spaces, funding frontline work, donating. It all matters. It all counts. It all contributes to the social change movement. Compassionate business owners like you care so much, but you run the risk of spreading your energy so thinly that it barely makes a difference. It’s important to be clear on your unique role… to focus your energy and attention so you can go deep. That’s powerful. That’s what helps move the needle.
A Permission Slip
You don’t have to choose between caring and selling.
Your business is part of your contribution to social change – a piece of the bigger puzzle.
Keep showing up. Keep speaking up. Keep caring. Keep selling.
Let it all belong… because it does.
